Two smokehouses. Two different meals.

Go to Midwood Smokehouse when the table wants chopped Carolina pork, brisket and ribs in the same full-service meal. Go to The Improper Pig when the fun is mixing smoked meat with kimchi, Thai sauce, smoked tofu and veggie-friendly sides.

Midwood Smokehouse

Plaza Midwood · bbq

The original Midwood Smokehouse, on Central Avenue in Plaza Midwood, opened by Frank Scibelli and the room the rest of the group grew out of. It cooks on an all-wood smoker and deliberately runs two traditions on one menu: hickory-smoked chopped Carolina pork finished with an Eastern North Carolina vinegar sauce, alongside St. Louis style ribs and Texas-style brisket. Queen City Nerve readers voted it the best barbecue in Charlotte in 2025.

The Improper Pig

Plaza Midwood · bbq, asian

The Improper Pig opened in Cotswold in 2014 crossing Carolina barbecue with Asian cooking, then rebranded and moved its flagship to 1600 Central Avenue in Plaza Midwood, which opened on 16 February 2026. Rea Farms and Fort Mill rooms also exist.
