Charlotte BBQ: Where to Start

Start with the Charlotte BBQ meal you actually want: a smoke shack, a full spread, or a Plaza Midwood stop where two very different menus share the same street.

If this is your first Charlotte BBQ meal, start at Sweet Lew's. It is the clearest North Carolina introduction in the city: Lexington-style chopped pork shoulder, four regional sauces and a smokehouse burning hickory, pecan and peach wood.

If that is not the meal you want, use the room and the menu to make the call. Charlotte's BBQ is not one tradition. The city has a neighborhood smoke shack, polished full-service rooms, an old-school saloon, a food-hall counter and two Plaza Midwood smokehouses that take the menu in very different directions.

Three easy decisions

  1. For a clear North Carolina starting point: order chopped pork at Sweet Lew's and try the Lexington tomato dip beside the Eastern vinegar sauce.
  2. For a Plaza Midwood meal: choose Midwood Smokehouse for the broad traditional spread or The Improper Pig for smoked meats, tofu and Asian flavors. The Plaza Midwood BBQ page puts them side by side.
  3. For the room as much as the food: choose McKoy's for the saloon, Mac's for a casual group meal, or Optimist Hall when everyone wants a different counter.

What you cannot order inside Charlotte now is Eastern North Carolina whole hog from an active pit. Bill Spoon's closed in 2020 and Bubba's closed in January 2026. The full story is in what happened to Charlotte's Eastern whole-hog BBQ.
